«Geniale Dilettanten die Stars der Stunde»

Die Musikrichtungen und Jugendkulturen, die in den 80ern entstanden, hatten alle ihren eigenen Sound und ihre eigenen Kleidungscodes. Arte geht der These nach, dass in dem heute vielfach als «geschmacklos» gescholtenen Jahrzehnt jene popkulturellen Gleise gelegt wurden, auf denen wir heute noch unterwegs sind. Damals seien «geniale Dilettanten die Stars der Stunde» gewesen. Eine neue Lust am Kommerz habe die linke Kulturkritik der 70er Jahre beerdigt und brachte Megastars wie etwa Madonna, Michael Jackson oder Prince hervor.

Gerade vor dem Hintergrund des tragischen Todes von Michael Jackson in diesem Sommer ist die Reihe eine bildende Reise in die Zeit von Neonfarben und Schulterpolstern. Die Doku-Reihe «Welcome To The Eighties», in der viele Zeitzeugen wie Stefan Remmler (Trio), Morten Harket (a-ha), Frank Farian oder Inga Humpe zu Wort kommen, gehört zum Arte-Projekt «Summer Of The Eighties».
