SEE THE FULL COMPARO:
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=135206?tid=edm...

They're not fast, they don't corner hard and they're certainly not the most pulse-quickening cars we've ever tested at Inside Line. But if fuel-efficiency and utility are priority items in your next car purchase, then the 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid and 2009 Honda Fit Sport are unbelievable machines.

Combining economic operation and utility like few other cars sold today, either of these Hondas is a responsible choice for the buyer looking to save fuel, minimize emissions and haul the family. Each has its own unique qualities — important distinctions that can't be overlooked.

The question, then, is which is the better car? To figure it out, for two weeks we used the 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid and the 2009 Honda Fit as they're designed to be used. We drove them to work, loaded our families in them, packed our groceries in them and took them to the track to measure their performance. We argued the merits of the Civic's superb fuel economy vs. the Fit's exceptional utility.

In doing so, we designed this test to suit the priorities of a buyer looking for reasonably priced utilitarian transportation. Accordingly, fuel economy and price make up the majority of each car's total score at 25 percent each. Performance, feature content and our 29-point evaluation score make up 15 percent each, while editors' personal and recommended picks combine for the remaining 5 percent.

  • Why would people spend loads of money on hybrids when you can buy a smaller car like the Fit that gets not much less MPG. Even if you factor in environmental impact it takes more resources to produce a hydrid because you need more raw materials to make the battery. If you really wanted to save money buy a CRX which gets 50MPG and cost around 5G's.

  • 67 ? good lord we're in 2008 . fuck those gas guzzlers wit all speed n no handling the only shit im interested back in the early days were the 427s. and all domestic shits have low resale cause they're crap . pointless .

  • The top commenter is right (though I'm not sure about spending $5K on a 1980s vehicle). Hybrid sticker prices are a killer.

The Civic Hybrid is lucky. Unlike the Prius, the Civic Hybrid is easy to find at a low price, and, as a hybrid, it retains its value excellently. However, it is true what people say -- the best value is typically found in low cost gas cars that gets 32+MPG, such as the Yaris, Fit, and Accent.

  • haha the civic hybrid is even slower than the insight and gets about the same mpg as it

  • why not just put the 1.8 civic engine/trans in the fit. better mpg rating and hey the extra power would help. isnt the fit supposed to be for hauling cargo in a small package. the extra hp would make the fit a lot better car

  • i think the only reasons a person would purchase a fit over a civic is for the utility and maybe somebody likes the style better. 28/36 mpg for a 2012 civic and 27/33 for a 2011 fit. an accord gets 23/34. the new civic has a 1.8l with 140hp and weighs 2681 with an automatic trans. the fit sport with auto weighs 2604 but only has 117 hp 1.5l. why wouldnt they just put the 1.8 in the fit. considering if your carrying cargo you will add a lot of weight and hey get better mpg

  • @whitefangv: thats true....BUT, some people are more concerned about safety.

  • conclusion: hybrids are a waste of money.

  • people the fit if you drive local and no freeway or you no one in ur city driving big car, cus u gonna kill yourself ur your family with that fit. Get accord hyubrid more safty. when it come to your life you just can't put any price on it. Well if you crying about the price then go with civic LX, cheaper than hybrid and you just pay a little more per month on gas, but you get the power u need, also fun to drive.

  • Not to include the annoying temperature limits hybrid have to faced.

I think the Fit is more pragmatic, greener choice.

If you want electric vehicle, go all the way with Tesla. Hybrid vehicle is one complex machinery. My Prius is one freaking laboratory on wheels with so many sensors and instruments on board, it is one expensive machine.

  • @whitefangv because we just want to encourage the new technologies
