1993 album Passion
An accomplished vocalist known for her formidable skills as well as her hits ( "Baby Come to Me," "A Whole New World"), Regina Belle was a pop singer who was a real artist. Rather than stick to the traditional formula of solely adhering to whatever the hot musical trend of the moment was, Belle treated her fans to her jazz leanings. On her gold Passion LP, the singer covered "If I Could," a standard that's best known version was done by Nancy Wilson. It's a beautiful song about a mother's wishes for her child. Belle, who was married to pro basketball player John Battle III of the Cleveland Cavaliers, had two children at the time of the recording of the tune. The track has a warm empathetic feel that comes from the singer's heartfelt interpretation. Like Cheryl "Pepsii" Riley's "Thanks for My Child," "If I Could" found its way onto the turntables of loving mothers and into the upper regions of the R&B chart, going to number nine in early 1993.
