I remembered the tight knit community and how getting an epic actually took skills/work......... i remember how the top raiders on my server were looked upon as Gods.........

That wasn't what defined skill in vanilla.. it was the progress to get to the point where this mage got to. The individual work that had to be done, the amount of runs you did in instances to get a 3-4 spellpower increase on that ring while it took over an hour to get a group ready and summoned to the instance. And if you really wanted to compete at that level you'd get stack after stack after stack of the best possible food, all possible elixirs, scrolls, you name it. That's what vanilla was.
