9mm, vs .40 S&W, vs .45 ACP

1: It is a NATO round. It is prevalent and cheap to shoot. Cheaper means more rounds down range. It is military and heavily used by law enforcement.
2: It has the least recoil of the three calibers...9mm is poppy...the .40 S&W is snappy... The .45 ACP is pushy. This makes it more comfortable for my wife to shoot. She will shoot it; therefore she will train with it. Lower recoil tends to equal better control-ability. You can get back on target faster.
3: Magazine capacity 9mm takes this category M&P9 vs M&P40 17+1 vs 15+1
4: Penetration: The 9mm has better penetration of the three.
5: Energy: It is the "weakest" in energy of the three, but that is relative because of the overlap amongst the three calibers.

Definitions:
Foot Pounds (ft/lbs): It is the energy transferred on applying a force of 1 pound-force (lbf) through a displacement of 1 foot.

  • i deflect weak 9mm's with my mannly american scrotum

  • @SupremeAmerican umm...I'd get that looked at...lol

  • Pick a caliber you're comfortable with, & practice with it, if you can connect well with 9mm, then use the best ammunition loads available, 124 Grain +P NATO, 147 Grain JHP will do the job effectively. Many police agencies prefer 40 S&W, because its a good balance. In the end, what matters defensively.........is if you can put your rounds on target. It doesn't matter what caliber you use if your can't shoot it accurately & effectively.

But that same logic can be applied to a .22, couldn't it?

  • Reese is a cool girl's name.

I like your talking points I think they make a lot of sense and tend to mirror what I have found in my research as well. Ideally, I think I preferr 40cal for performance and stopping power however, the availability, price, and mag capactiy for 9mm are better. Plus my CCW (keltec PF9) should be able to share rounds with my full size pitol and even my pistol carbine. in a WROL situation I want to carry only one pistol caliber and one Rifle caliber. (5.56/2.23)

  • @cbr6864 until the lungs collapse and finally run out of air. Shot placement is key with any round, they reason I carry .45 is you can now carry 10+1 in a subcompact but id feel just as safe with a .380 or a 9mm

  • @cbr6864 light recoil and mag capacity. The 9mm has such a bad rep is because most shootings are with cheap ball ammo. Want to know what each round really does go hog hunting, although i dont hunt with my 9mm i have taken the kill shot with my 9mm. Trust me the 9mm will get the job done even the .380 with proper ammo selection will get it done.

It all depends on what you hit sure if you use 9mm ball and fire 5 shots all straight through the lungs the threat will keep coming for some time

  • The truth is with modern ballistics almost any round will be deadly. There is no such thing as knockdown power, i have taken a double lung with my .308 only to watch the deer jump straight up and run 50yds. The only way to drop a target is either major organ damage or if the target bleeds out. A 9mm will punch a hole in a heart just the same as a 10mm.

personally i carry a .45 i find the difference between a 9mm and a 40 to be so small its not worth the trade off of

  • @shootcentermass I don't deal in that arena so, no I haven't.

  • @jaredleospirit And its a business the people who make .40s .45s do things to make sales and in reality are the same people who make the 9 lol the .45s target market: matcho men, .40: who cant deside between 9 or .45. and 9mm: the general alround public. All markets are designed for sales if the .40 and .45 where so good or even the nine there wouldnt be such a variety or debates about it. The 9 is superior ,factors: cost, versatiliy, adequate stopping power, higher capacity, availabilty,
