I love this scene. The writng was genious, and the delivery perfect. The way Bacall takes the cigerette out of the pack , packs it lights it then snubs it out right after marlowe catches her. All the fidgeting with her purse and her drink. Bacall is one of the best actresses ever.

beowulfthedane, you are dead right, I couldn't agree with you more. However, I'd like to say that what really made this scene (for me) was the timing.

There are two versions of this movie. This scene was in the one that went into general release. In the 1990s, a different (earlier) version of the film was discovered, and that one is often shown now. Unfortunately, it lacks this excellent scene - which, despite its sexy innuendo, was NOT edited out but in fact was always present in the standard version of this film.

People usually don't remember that this famous scene goes from fun interplay to an abrupt change of tension and nervousness.
