Greetings! Today we should have a starter! Since I won't be able to dedicate any time between now and the weekend to bake sourdough bread I will be feeding this today, 1 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of water, giving it a good stir and allowing it to sit out until tomorrow morning. Then I will put a regular lid on the jar and place it in the fridge. This will slow down the yeast in the jar and sort of suspend it.

I think I may try to make the dough for the bread on Friday afternoon because you will have to allow this dough to rise for anywhere between 8 and 9 hours before it doubles. Overnight rising sounds pretty good to me!

Before you will make the dough, you will want to feed the starter 1 cup of flour and allow it to come to room temperature so that the yeast has a chance to liven up.

I will do videos of each step so you can follow along and hopefully in the end we will all have a wonderful loaf of sourdough bread to eat with dinner Saturday night!

I thank you for following along and joining me in this adventure in microbiology! A delicious one it is! As always, happy eating and happy sourdough-ing!

  • Also question. Would you throw away your starter if a fruit fly touched the top even if you scooped it out?

  • @Ejahi Nope : ) same thing happened to me. No worries. That little thing is no problem. Just take it out. I wouldn't freak out about that. Just keep it to yourself. It can be our little secret. ; ) Noreen

  • I am on day 5 today. I made my 1st dough tonight at 8pm and I am going to check it in the morning. I also fed the starter what I took out. My question is how long do I have to wait to use the starter again? Do I have to wait another 3 days of feeding or can I use it again tommorow? Hopefully my bread comes out right. I will post the video tommorow after the 1st loaf comes out of the oven. I have posting videos everyday.

  • @Ejahi No, you don't have to wait. Just feed it after you take away with an equal amount of flour and water to what you took out. Allow to sit out. Feed it again with 1 cup of flour before you want to make bread again. Always feed your starter before you want to make bread. Please post your vids to the corresponding days of my videos. Than you will get more traffic to your channel. Noreen : )

  • At any point did your remove some starter then feed it? I have read on some sites that you remove some then feed it. I have two starters going as well. One just flour and water and the other I used some of that first starter and added it to some flour and home made plain yogurt. The yogurt one is much more active than the plain one. They are finally expanding up in the jars, it's day 5 I think. Does this mean that it's ready to use?

  • Omg I thought mine died! I fed t more flour and some filtered water and it's live again...I'm not making bread anytime soon Noreen, how do I store it? Fridge, tightly closed lid?

  • That's a bad mother... shut yo mouth... had to do it! lol I am sure enjoying this journey through sourdough.

  • I had to restart my starter! I had used the wrong juice and it never did really do much, so I took my sweet red grapes and started a new one. It's going to take a while, but will be there to watch you make the bread when you get the time to do it. I have seen raisins used, but when I saw a video on the grapes I had to try it. Can't wait to see if your bread does well, your starter sure looks ready! Bet it smells nice and icky, just like it should!!! lolol
