The idea ofthe legitimacy of the state. The idea offull equality between the tribes and races in general. The idea ofequality between individuals, even if partial, particularly between the sexes and between masters and slaves. Ideas about responsibility and accountability, cooperation and consultation. Defend the rights of many such as the presumption of innocence and freedom of movement, property rights, and the right to work.
i hope that u got it !!

@ALHaniah I think you're missing the irony. Most Americans confuse democracy with liberalism. Western media tends to gloss over attempts to address real cultural differences as racism or intolerance. But it is simply naive to think that we know what's best for another culture. If Middle Eastern countries can use democratic principles to make life better for their people, that's terrific. For Western nations to impose such principles with troops and heavy artillary is unconscionable.

I realise what you're saying is true. However, you have failed to observe one fact, the fact that there was once a time when the muslim world was in prosperity. Although the people will most certainly vote in a theocratic government, I believe it will be one that will promote a peaceful understanding with the west and allow for prosperity. I do believe this can happen and the Arabs deserve a chance to make it happen.

@chrisstorvik I don't know that any theocratic government is likely to promote a peaceful understanding with another culture that disagrees with their theology. Maybe I'm just a pessimistic westerner trying to take lessons from the impact that theocratic rule in Europe had on the populace in the Middle Ages and its horrific result on the Muslim world over the course of 2 centuries and 9+ crusades.

@chrisstorvik The Arab Spring is certainly a cause for hope. However, I would caution westerners to revise their expectations if they believe that democracy in the Middle East will mimic western democracy. I'm not saying it will be worse, just different. The Muslim community does deserve a chance to find their own way. Us westerners need to allow them to do that. We just shouldn't expect that they'll come up with anything remotely similar to what Thomas Jefferson would have envisioned.
