Sri Lankan doctors retract death claims - We lied under LTTE Pressure - 10 Jul 09

Aljazeera and west European media (USA, EU) still trying to defend LTTE terrorists and attack Sri Lanka after former doctors of No Fire Zone admited that they exaggerated casualty fugures due to LTTE threats. Aljazeera, west European media deny human rights violations in Afghan-Pakistan border by USA, EU.

Dr. Sathyamoorthy, whose astronomical casualty figures formed the basis for dozens of international reports that slammed Sri Lankan government for HR violations, now says he lied.
This chief medical officer of Mullaitivu who along with four of his colleagues maintain that they provided grossly distorted facts for survivals sake, dropped the bombshell after nearly 50 days in CID custody.

One may argue that that there is no guarantee that the five doctors are not under duress now. A fair argument, one may say.

However the 6000 civilian death toll given by Dr. Sathyamoorthy has now been proven a big lie even by independent sources. What would be interesting to see is how the agencies and international rights groups which went by his figures and issued passionately worded statements condemning the behaviour of security forces would now swallow this bitter pill. Will they admit the mistake and apologize or question the authenticity of the figures since the doctors are now in the CID custody?

During those violent days, government moves to counter agency allegations were met with the reply Sathyamoorthy is one of your men, a government doctor. He wouldnt lie. The government on the other hand maintained that he was not part of their medical cadre.

However fifty days into the arrest of Dr. Sathyamoorthy by the security forces, the government now insists that he is attached to the GMOA and had been virtually under LTTE custody.
