  • wonderful video both for those familiar and unfamiliar with the work- I have to disagree about the Zurich Opera dvd though, which I found very disappointing- the "starkly modern" production made no sense to me at all, though the leads are very well sung. I'd recommend the MET Opera DVD far more highly, which features many of the artist from the opera talk roundtable discussion :)

  • @ilkinond I cannot but agree with you more. Thanks to the DVDs, I have grown to love opera like never before, and shall in all certainty continue to do so.

Not many people can love a work at the first hearing, especially the 20th century or the late romantics. For that reason alone, it is better to buy the DVD or CD and give it time to grow on you...

In time, I may even start loving Schoenberg (Gosh.... did I say that?????)\

  • Super posting - thanks. As a Brit I am always interested in the small contribution that British composers have made to classical music - Britten I think is easily the most important. I like the extracts in the show, but, one fears, as an opera, it probably goes on for hour after hour. I shall never forget being stuck in a performance of Tristan, absolutely desperate for a piss. That's the advantage of a DVD though, clearly. More shows like this soon I hope.

  • Excellent! I'm reseaching this opera and this video was an excellent overview. :)

  • Excellent. Good analysis and fine historical facts. Wich it were longer.
