The work is realized by using a video camera in a classical photo studio setup to portray families in different countries. The participating families are invited to sit in front of a wide mirror in self-determined seating arrangement for a duration of 10 minutes. Within this time, they are asked to communicate by gesture and facial expression only and without talking to each other. What becomes visible in the work is the unique atmosphere of each family, the relations in-between the family members, differences and similarities concerning values, habits, customs, role behaviour within one socio-cultural cotext and in comparison of the different contexts in contrast to each other.
Inherent in the work is also a confrontation of intimate and medialized substantialities: on one side there are the family members, an intimate community communicating. On the side of medialized matter, there are not only mirror and camera as proxies opposing the intimate reality - but also the context of art itself with discourses and practices of exhibition and reception is transcending the here and now of the recording.
Both layers - the anthropologic as well as the one on media structures and qualities - come together with the question on relations between identity and media based communication.
