Pole Walking ( http://www.keenfit.com ) stems from the sport of cross country skiing. It's believed to have originated as far back as the 1930's, when the cross country ski coaches of Finland were struggling to keep their athletes in peak performance during the off season. Using nordic walking poles helped their athletes to stay in peak condition all year long, and soon became popular with casual walkers who were looking for the same results from their walking exercise.
