This was the CD release concert in Thessaloniki, Greece, for my friend Katerina Papadopoulou's debut CD as a composer. The musicians are some of the finest Turkish Roman musicians from Istanbul. The singer is a Pontic Greek named Stathis Nikolaidis.

  • Byzantium was the source of this lovely music, Ottomans came quite later...

  • Actually, the composer says she based the music on both Byzantine and Ottoman pieces.

  • Someone told me it was called "bozuk" (=broken, not bad) because of the permanent position of the frets - they cannot be moved to fit different modes (makams/dromoi).

  • bouzouki doesnt come from the turks, only the name is of turkish origin, not the instrument.

  • Why do you say that, tsisgaros? Where does it come from, and how do you know? I'm not necessarily disagreeing - I'm just curious.

  • I'd just like to add that one of the things Katerina was trying to do with this CD and concert was bring Turks and Greeks together, so please don't use it as a reason to fight.
