At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Tommie Smith and his teammate John Carlos came in first and third, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. As they received their medals, each man raised a black-gloved fist, creating an image that will always stand as an iconic representation of the complicated conflations of race, politics, and sports.

  • I'd also like to pay tribute to Peter Norman, the silver medalist in the event who stood in solidarity with Smith and Carlos, wearing the badge of the Olympic Project for Human Rights.

He was shunned by Australian Olympic Committee Officials for his part in this great moment in the struggle for Civil Rights in the USA. As a fellow Australian, I recall Norman's part in this moment with great pride.

  • This should be required viewing on YT. Simple as that.

  • Thank you for making this video. I enjoyed it more than you know and will make sure my kids watch it also! Bravo!!!!

  • Wish we could have unity like this nowadays. But instead we have a lot more BULLSHIT!

  • great vid

  • This should be in the top 10 of all time watched videos on YouTube. 40 years later: things have improved, but so many things have yet to be perfected. 1968 was a keystone year for America. Let us hope 2008 will be the same. Could anyone in 1968 have imagined a Black man would be running for president in only 40 years? We have come a long way, America. Now let's go the distance.
