Al and his combo performed that number at Al Hirt's restaurant attraction inside the grounds of the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans on Press Day. Afterwards, he graciously endorsed The American Music Show (from Atlanta) at the request of the show's co-host James Bond

  • WE MISS YOU AL...RIP. P.S...It always bugs me when I hear people talken in the back ground...here is a truely master musician and they can't give a rats hairy behind, but just shows the continued drop in interest of things of beauty in our culture.

  • This wasn't a regular performance. Al was entertaining inside the Hospitality Tent on Press Day around lunchtime. Food was being served and the press was wandering in and out as they toured the fairgrounds.

  • the king

  • NAVYMU1RET....well what would you expect? If they had some rock musician jumping all over the stage playing and knowing only 2 chords he would get attention ! he'd be considered coooool man...but culture appreciation in this country is like dhaaaaa ville.

  • That was nice of him doing the spot for those guys. I might have said, "But I've never seen it." I hate to tell a fib. "Send me a tape of the show and it won't be a fib." LOL

  • It's called "Java" and it's available on the right under Related Videos".

  • Man, could Al play trumpet or what?!? I still have a couple of his Dixieland LPs on the old Audio Fidelity label. Sometime in 1960 or '61 he did a song called "Perky", based on the cofffee percolator commercial (Maxwell House? Folgers?). If someone has this recording could you PLEASE post it?

  • I had the good pleasure of hearing Al perform at the Sorg Opera House in Middletown, Ohio shortly before he died. While he was not the talent he once was (and understandably so) it was an experience I'll never forget. I went backstage, shook his hand and got his autograph. We will not see the likes of his talent ever again. Perhaps the greatest of his recordings is I Can't Get Started. I've listened to it literally hundreds of times, and I never tire of it. Its a masterpiece.

  • He was completely without ego and really loved what he did. I would have loved to have met him.
