This rattlesnake was found near Ozona, Tx during an archaeological survey of the Escondido Draw. This video was taken above the valley at about 9:00 AM. The snake had 10 pairs of rattles.

Rattlesnakes come in 16 distinct varieties, but can always be identified by the jointed rattles on the tail. This is important to know, because rattlesnakes have a venomous bite that can be fatal to humans. The rattlesnake in this video was filmed in Ozona, Texas. When disturbed, most snakes will try and retreat, but if the snake rattles its tail, this is a clear warning for the person or animal in its presence to retreat immediately!

Rattlesnakes thrive best in habitats where there are lots of small rodents to feed on. Rattlesnakes can grow to be as long as five feet, but the average adult size is between 3 and 4 feet. Rattlesnakes lay eggs, which the mother keeps in her body until they hatch. The young are then born alive and independent, and usually leave their mother's side when they are about a week old.

  • Yeah it was a western diamondback. What did you end up doing with it?

  • I ended up walking (the long way) around it. I was spooked all day. Every rabbit and mouse I saw and heard had me jumping.

  • please see my video response to you, I wanted to know if I did in fact encounter a pigmy rattle. thanks

  • I'm pretty sure it was not a pigmy. I have some high res photos of the same snake and it has been looked at by biologists and they said it was a typical western diamondback. Shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you some of the pictures if you want.

  • Whacha waitin fer?? Point, and shoot it dead boy....

  • Thats a big ace rattler.

  • That thing looked huge. How long would you guess that it was?Maybe it was just cause it was kind of standing up or whatever you call it.But it looked like a big snake.

  • I know the feeling.Rattlesnake encounters always make me a little jump afterwards too.lol

  • I have caught & released hundreds of them in Canada on the Georgian Bay.They call them mississaga rattle snakes up there instead of pigmy or swamp rattlers. I have pictures of them all. The place I camp & fish is full of them. The largest was 3/12 foot long & real fat.
