This glitch DOES work in the 3DS Virtual Console version.

This glitch is quite simple to perform. Kill 89 enemies without leaving the overworld, then kill a particular 90th enemy to get the tunic of your choice.

Enemy indices--Every enemy on a screen has an index. A single onscreen enemy usually has index zero (the urchin near the sword is index 2), and multiple onscreen enemies will have indices 0, 1, 2, etc.

How it works-- the game writes the actor index of each enemy you kill to an array that follows the enemy kill counter. If you kill enough enemies, it will go beyond the bounds of the array and into the color data for the onscreen sprites. This starts with Link (90th "entry" in the array), and continues on to the various onscreen things.

I suspect that this comes from the porting to GBC. In LA, that data would be unused, as there would be no color data for a B&W game. When adding the color data, they forgot about that array routine, and never noticed it since even if someone did kill 90 enemies in a row in the overworld, there's a good chance that enemy has index 00 and thus does nothing.

  • what if you get red tunic then ask for red tunic in color dungeon?

  • @Cosmix360 You get the red tunic.

  • If I constantly switch between tunics, will my photo data be overwritten by the damage sprite tunic every time I get that one?

  • @Shoopman47 yes. Unfortunately, pics 3 and 4 can't be gotten after the Marin event, so it's best to do this before then.

  • This is awesome! Just curious, what tunic would link get if he killed actor #04? Or does that never appear in-game?

  • @nintendork64 Dark Blue tunic. I have a vid of getting that one.

  • thumbs up if you think this is the best Zelda game

  • I am about to try this for the first time. What happens when you have infinite enemies (like the spiders out of the hole or the graveyard dogs)? Do these count, and how would you determine the index in this instance?

  • when i had the orginal when i was little i couldnt figure out how to open the first temple so i just randomly killed monster in the beach area then i get the red tunic

now older playing it on the 3ds i was wondering how i didnt get the tunic being half way in XD

  • what happens if i kill an enemy with the index number of 5?

  • I've been using this glitch since the first time I played this game, found it out myself. Although I thought you needed a piece of power or guardian acorn to do it. About 90% of the time I got the color I wanted though.

Anyway, according to the theory in the description you would lose your color if you stay in the overworld for too long and kill 90 enemies. You would probably get a 0 and turn green again. This has however never happened to me. Could you explain that to me?

  • umm you guys are fags for not doing any work

  • @pinkpenguin327 Better idea would to go where HE went to hunt.Went there, got Red Tunic.

  • Yeah,this does work on the 3DS ver.Got the red tunic.Thanks!

  • @Cosmix360 THE WORLD ENDS!!!!!! Na, you just get the red tunic again :)
