  • @calif92627 -- Twain loved the paddlewheel steamboat and he loved the river. As a matter of fact, it was during his years on the river that he chose his pen name. "Mark Twain" was a frequent call of the leadsman. It meant that the water was 2 fathoms (12 feet) deep and indicated safe water. ~from boatsafe(dot)com

  • That is interesting that Sam Clemmens got his name form his riverboat expirience but there was a newspaper columnest writing by the name Mark Twane whos actual name was Isiah Sellers and when Isiah died Sam took over the colum for the newspaper and the name of Mark T
