Vatican sources say that Pope Benedict is set to approve the beatification of his predecessor, John Paul II, this week. Let's take a closer look.
Former Pope John Paul II will move a step closer to sainthood this week when his successor Pope Benedict is expected to approve his beatification.
In a few days the Vatican's Prefect for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Angelo Amato, will present Benedict with the evidence that John Paul performed a miracle and should be beatified,
At that point Benedict is expected to approve the recommendations and set a date for the ceremony less than six years after the death of the much loved Polish pontiff.
One miracle is needed for beatification, while two are required for sainthood.
The initial phases of a sainthood cause can usually take decades or, in some cases, hundreds of years.
However, Benedict put John Paul on the fast track a month after his death, dispensing with Church rules that normally impose a five-year waiting period before the procedure begins.
On Tuesday a Vatican commission of cardinals and bishops called the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, approved medical and theological evidence of John Paul's miracle, paving the way for the beatification request.
Crowds at John Paul's funeral in April 2005 chanted "santo subito" ("make him a saint now")
His 27-year papacy, which began in 1978, was one of the most historic and tumultuous of modern times.
During his pontificate, communism collapsed across eastern Europe, including in his native Poland.
The first non-Italian pope in 450 years, he was seriously wounded in a 1981 assassination attempt.
Sister Marie Simon-Pierre, a 47-year-old French nun diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, said it inexplicably disappeared two months after Pope John Paul's death, after she and her fellow nuns prayed to him.
Oh yes, i remember when he died ( on my birthday no less) pl were wanting him sainted.

@Consul51. the church is built on Jesus. Peter's confession is what we build our faith on. "you are the Christ the Son of the Living God". Peter did not found the catholic church.

@hafizf86 Actually the first Pope was the Apostle St. Peter, to whom Jesus said, "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Mat 16:18. Peter went on to found what is now the Catholic Church that has grown strong for almost 2000 years.

@TheBingggg I also am Catholic but our church had its very dark period in the middle ages, a few popes were bad news. But the Catholic Church grows stronger and stronger

@eckspretion I understand your statement and fully respect it but its just a matter of where you stand, Catholics have a point of view as other Christians have theirs, but our love for Christ unites us, bickering among people just because they have differences in religion is so wrong.

Who wants to be a saint?
The church makes you believe that only few selected very special people may become saints through a complicated process....do you want to be a saint? Then read and study all the ten commandments of God in exodus 20, love God with all your heart strength soul and mind and love and treat others as you would want to be treated you can become a saint as well....

@hotathlete2 Yeah all Catholics do is molest children right? and constantly have embezzlement within many churches??? But im not attacking Catholics so you shouldn't attempt to attack Born-Again Christians, or Atheists or ANYONE else...just set the example if you consider yourself a good Catholic

He is just a man...who is dead! Only Christ overcame death to be the 1 true saint. John Paul II was a good man, but that is it! It is an insult to put a dead man before a living God.

It i s amazing that how all the other Christian and jewish beliefs have completly righteous people. Only a few Caholics( worlds oldest Christian religion) have strayed in all these centuries. Look at all the good that has been done by past popes.
