This four minute video features the two latest additions to our locomotive fleet - namely Hornby's Class 08 Shunter (D3105) and Bachmann's Class 42 diesel hydraulic, "Royal Naval Reserve", D812.

The Class 08 was acquired to work the Brewery siding and that is what she is seen doing during this video. The Class 42, meanwhile, is a bit of an interloper to the region that we are modelling since the Warships, together with all the other diesel hydraulic classes, were very much locos of the Western Region.

However, I have many fond memories of hydraulic haulage, especially behind the Western Class 52's, so we just had to have one or two of them on our layout.

Both the Shunter and the Warship will be weathered in time, with the 08 only lightly so while the Warship will be quite heavily treated in order to depict her eking out the last of her days before final withdrawal.

The 08 was purchased with Hornby's own sound fitted but we did not like this very much so she was soon sent to Howes for a reblow and I think she sounds much better as a result.

The Howes sound is also fitted to the Class 42 as well as the Class 24 seen here while the Class 47, seen at the beginning, still has Bachmann's own factory-fitted sound.

  • Hi kevleisa, thank you for your kind comment, it is much appreciated, and I'll join you in a pint. I hear the beer from Gunness Brewery is pretty tasty!

  • Another beautiful video!

I love the realism of the railroad tracks, this is very well done and very loyal.

Bravo for sound and congratulations for your work is superb!

(Sorry for the translation, I translate with google)

  • Bonjour marcth25. Merci pour votre commentaire gentil. C'est beaucoup apprécié. Votre traduction était excellente - j'espère que la mine est aussi! :-)

  • nice brewery, layout looks good. I wish they did a Freightliner 08 with sound. I am modelling a container yard!!

  • Hi armleyroad, thank you for your comment and I think the Bachmann brewery is a really lovely collection of buildings and we were lucky to have the room to use the whole set. It was perfect for what we wanted. As for a Freightliner-liveried Class 08, I think Hornby should seriously consider producing one since I am sure you are not alone in modelling such a yard or depot judging by the continued popularity of Freightliner wagons and locos etc.

  • Hi DH41z, thank you very much for your comment and the layout is owned by myself and members of my family not by a club. We live in Somerset, near Yeovil and started building this in August 2007.

  • @thoscar02 thank you for your reply on my comment and thank you for posting your lakeland railway set up it is well worth viewing regards kevleisa

  • Hi porter6669196327, thank you for your comment and, yes, I do like the Warship sound - it brings back many memories. As for the Hornby 08, it is a really lovely model and I can recommend it but the factory-fitted sound is not that great. Of course, this is only my opinion but I felt the sound was a bit weak and the number of functions available was somewhat limited. The Howes version, I think, is far superior.

  • Hi itgamer100, thanks for the comment and, yes, the icon does look a little realistic. I suppose that must mean we are (almost) getting things right. Yes, the Hornby 08 is a super-detail model and is, in my humble opinion, one of the best 08s around. I think this particular one has proved extremely popular.
