Day Job

You call me up to say you've started something
And you don't know where it will lead.
I try to laugh too, cuz I'm happy for you -
Really I am, though I choke on my smile.
It seems rejection comes in so many forms
And my self-confidence is shattered with so many words
And I'm trying to find the in-between
Your hopes and my jokes
And my songs and your dreams.

I'm sorry to say that I don't have a clue
When you tell me about where he takes you too
I thought I knew the secret places that lovers could go
How he whispers you into them, I'll never know
Though I've cast myself down in forbidden streams
And I've cast across the landscape that darkens my dreams
But the powers of pride I hold close to my soul
And I'll cauterize my anguish
So you'll never know.

I fly myself a fairy tale against swift-coming night
And I protect myself from heartache with the songs that I write
But it's hard to be a diva when your composure fails
And when an unexpected love story takes the wind from your sails
So I'll hide and immerse myself in ancient history
With some philosopher from the 16th century
Who dreamt of immortality and other white lies
And tried to pierce the fabric
Of all-healing time.

Now something's got to give or I think I'll fall apart
In this space I've imprisoned myself and my heart
All the songs that I write and the words that I sing
They stand empty and motionless, they don't mean a thing
Though I could speak the words and set myself free
I find I can't argue - hell, I can't even breathe
I'm too tired not to love you both and too broke to flee
And not blind enough not to notice
