About the Event:

In his role as the leader of Germany's main opposition party, Sigmar Gabriel has repeatedly called for more solidarity from the current Government in dealing with the Euro crisis. On Wednesday October 26th 2011 it supported a crucial cross-party vote on enhancing the EU's bailout fund, the EFSF.

In his speech Mr. Gabriel spoke about the shortcomings of European integration and the alternative options for strengthening future political cooperation across Europe.

About the Speaker:

Sigmar Gabriel is the leader of Germany's main opposition group, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), and served as a Federal Minister under Chancellor Merkel from 2005 until 2009.

  • I seriously hope that the IIEA invite speakers of the current social democratic movement in Germany, the new Left (which is not perceived as party in English media at all...) If the rest of Europe wants German demand to increase to reduce trade imbalances, the only way I say is that the SPD is forced back to a social democratic path of expanding employees rights by strengthening this new Left. The European public should fear the current German SPD for it's antihumane tendencies.

  • I am German an I have lost all trust in German "Social Democracy". How can a party leader talk 18 min without saying anything? These days are full of challenges, especially in the German political domestic discussions. The truth is: the so called "Social Democracy" in Germany has its part in the current crisis. Gabriel is insane talking about decreasing wages in German middle classes, but not mentioning the labour market liberalisations introduced by the SPD!
