Christmas Eve Mass at the Russian Orthodox Church of Our Lady of Glastonbury in Hamilton Ontario Canada. The Church of our Lady of Glastonbury is attached to Christ the Saviour Benedictine Monastery (Christminster). The Western Rite used at the Russian Orthodox Church of our Lady of Glastonbury is the Latin Rite that was in use prior to the Great Schism (in Traditional English Translation). Latin is used from time to time both at the Church and at the Monastery and often Hymns are sung in Latin as well. The Church and Monastery maintains a close relationship with the Antiochian Western Rite Vicariate and its various Parishes some of whom have Oblates under the spiritual direction of Christminster and its Abbot Dom James Deschene.

I see pews all the time in modern Orthodox churches, both Greek and Russian. Who cares? Why stand for hours? That is insane! Insane! Only a fanatic would insist that God cares about such nonsense. Grow up.

We were not talking about people who ARE NOT ABLE TO STAND we were talking about healthy ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS!. Exceptions are NOT THE NORM.

From APOSTOLIC TIMES - ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS STOOD during prayer and PROSTRATED and FELL DOWN.

Sitting on PEWS WAS NEVER KNOWN IN ALL HISTORY of the ORTHODOX CHURCH. THIS IS PURE BLASPHEMY - the destruction OF ALL SERVICES - an ABSOLUTE NO GO.

1.) "Scriptural Proof" - there is NO SCRIPTURAL PROOF because the WHOLE SCRIPTURE SPEAKS OF PROSTRATING AND STANDING.

2.) The verse u quote is a SYMBOLIC METAPHOR OF HEAVEN - and not about WORSHIP IN THE TEMPLE. U also can read that Angels play harps - BUT NO ANGEL PLAY ANY HARP.

1.) Only because some modernist "pseudo-orthodox" churches use them in USA does not meant that it is ok. Many orthodox parishes in USA are very modernised - especially the greek ones.

2.) It does matter - READ THE HOLY FATHERS - they sad that it is not even allowed to step from one feet on the other.

3.) They talked about proper behaviour in the Temple of God; how to dress, how stand and prostrate etc.. how to face east...

Don't fixate or obsess on pews--I know an Orthodox church that has pews. I know 2 churches that have pews. Many do. Sit or stand it does not matter. The same is true for the Holy Eastern Catholic churches with all their beautiful icons and incense.

@MyBetty111: The evidence for this is that Western Europe WAS ORTHODOX FOR ALMOST 1000 years - WITHOUT ORGANS, without PEWS, without STATUES etc...

The Western Orthodox Churches also had ICONS, Mosaics, beautiful Chant: Gregorian, Ambrosian, etc...without instruments or organs.

This all is not about "Ethno" but TRADITION.

Western Orthodox Christians should not become russian or greek but SHOULD GO BACK TO THEIR ROOTS but their REAL ROOTS and not a mixture of half catholic half orthodox

But it is not true. Because Orthodoxy is NOW EVERYTHERE and it does not matter if u are Serbian, Russian, German, Spanish, Italian etc..

Orthodoxy is Orthodoxy. Ethnocentrism would be heresy like Philetism.In the contrary HOly Orthodoxy completely sanctifies ALL NATIONALITIES and CULTURES.

But within the framework of HOLY TRADITION. It is not a cultural thing to sit on pews or play organs. This is part of Tradition not to do it.

St. Photios the great said: THERE IS NO GREATER LOVE than to tell people the TRUTH. People today do not want to hear the truth. Their love is superficual.

Christ was very strict when it was about the Holiness of the Temple. Remember He even destroyed the tables of the money changers. Was it love to destroy them? YES - LOVE FOR GOD and HIS TEMPLE.
