The cross is the same thing as the lingam yoni. This reaches far into the ancient world long before the Babylonian Tammuz which is originally the Sumerian Dumuzid. Just because this was a symbol for a deity doesn't mean it originated with that deity particularly if these symbols predate the deity. What is interesting is mythologies that describe a tree that is struck at its base by lightening from a storm god.

the romans used primarily a crux, not the same as a cross..

I read a lot about this cross.The most likely explanation of its origin for me is the contact of central asian horsemen (Pechenegs) with their own belief and cultural signs who had contact with the byzantines who adopted this.What we today also know is that the byzantines enslaved pecheneg soldiers who were probably from central asia.Later the council of nicea that fused christian and non-christian elements had a huge impact on what we today consider as the christian belief including the cross.
