there are only very few players who know how to play a ballad....Art was one of them. He knew how to get the most out of ONE note....
After Charlie parker not many alto players impress me...except Art...and...Desmond..Lee konitz and may be Phil Woods....I'm sure there are many more good ones...but ARt was in a class ALL by himself.

I love the way Art played ballads. There's a great version of But Beautiful on one of the Village Vanguard recordings. Raw emotion.
