When I listen to Bashmet these days, we must understand he is ageing and has personal problems which are affecting his playing, but hearing his artistry is worth hearing the small little mistakes he makes. It's almost like hearing Horowitz's last recitals, he made a handful of mistakes, but nonetheless is a genius.

This music is chromatic, but so was baroque. It is no secret that Reger wrote these as a tribute to Bach, whom he greatly admired-being an organist himself.

While I'm all for the arrangement for orchestra in its place (it IS a lovely arrangement, though it does not allow the freedom an unaccompanied suite usually provides), this video is really disappointing. Bashmet continues to become more and more sloppy as time passes-sad, considering he was considered one of the greatest viola technicians of all time.
