The original reason behind the masks was simply a visual representation of each members personality while keeping the band illusive. As they got bigger people hunted down pictures, they spread across the internet and before long everyone knew what they looked like. It's not like the members hide when they're not in Slipknot, everyone knows who they are. But if Slipknot where to drop the masks it wouldn't be the same.

No, that was his real hair, he cut it and dyed it blonde when he went back to start writting Stone Sour's latest album, Come What(ever) May.
This is old footage from a dvd, cannot remember the title... I believe it was during the Iowa days when Corey's hair would have been covered by his mask.
