Normally onlookers are shooed away from disaster scenes.

But on tomorrow in Mound they will be welcomed with front row seats and concessions.

"Operation Black Cat" will draw hundreds of emergency responders and likely a fair share of spectators to Mound for a large-scale emergency exercise of a simulated explosion along the old Shoreline Drive.

Black Cat will involve all the police and fire departments serving Mound, Minnetrista, South Lake, Deephaven, Wayzata, Orono, West Hennepin, Medina, Corcoran, St Bonifacius, Long Lake, Excelsior, Maple Plan, Loretto, along with the ambulance services serving these areas, Hennepin County, the Minneapolis Bomb Squad and Minnesota Collapse Structure Rescue.

Wayzata Police Chief Mike Risvold, who is the public information officer for the exercise.

The public will have a chance to watch the exercise unfold from the top level of the Mound parking ramp. The exercise will run from 7 a.m. until noon. Concessions will be available during the event.

Four buildings along the old Shoreline Drive will be damaged during the exercise and later demolished. Among those buildings are the old House of Moy and Glass Plus buildings.

Birchview Kids College Day
Some folks see the arrival of the first robin as a sure sign of spring, others point to the green grass poking up through the ground. But at Bichview Elementary School in Plymouth, the surest sign of spring is the arrival of Birchview Kids College Day.

The activity consists of two afternoon sessions of learning with dozens of members from the community. This year, 39 sessions were held. Here's a report from Sun Newspapers Managing Editor Paul Wahl.
