INDEX: kick started a global movement within education by launching the first ever Education to Improve Life Conference.


Over the course of three years INDEX: with the support of EU has set out to co-develop a format for formally certifying educators and teachers to teach Design to Improve Life as part of general education curriculum at professional colleges as well as primary and secondary schools.
Now the partner group of the project spanning professional colleges, universities, schools, high schools, ministries and city authorities from two countries, call for the first ever international Education to Improve Life Conference. At the conference the very first results and learning of the INDEX: Education Program will be presented and discussed and the voices of international renowned educators will be heard.


All over the world there is a growing understanding of the importance of education. Societies need critical, innovative and responsible citizens. Businesses need co-workers capable of developing new and better solutions and individuals needs learning and frames to develop their full potential.
Aligned with the above, a growing understanding that our globalized and knowledge based world needs different skills from those needed in the industrial area is emerging. Design thinking, design processes and design methodologies connected to this, is often seen as one of the means to establish the learning environments needed to give the future generations the skills they will need in the 21st century.
INDEX: takes a step further, by insisting that design thinking is not enough and that the design methodologies taught MUST be deeply anchored in what the organization in 2002 coined Design to Improve Life; a user based design approach that ensures that the tipple bottom line of economic, social and environmental sustainability is always taken into account.
The conference is aligned with INDEX:s Education Program a development initiative lead by INDEX: bringing together cities, states, universities, college of education as well as primary schools and high schools in Denmark and Sweden with the objective of establishing Design to Improve Life as part of mandatory curriculum for all teachers in Denmark and Sweden.
The Education to Improve Life Conference will bring together leading thinkers and doers within the fields of educational policymaking, education, learning and design from all over the world and match these with the global INDEX: network, led by the renowned INDEX: International Jury and INDEX: Partner Cities.
At the conference INDEX: will present for the first time it's new take on Design to Improve Life thinking.
