Over time, Shakespeare has moved away from his gritty roots to become something different entirely, "high entertainment" for the well-to-do. Yet when Shakespeare originally wrote and performed, his was an entertainment for the masses; the unwashed masses.

"Staging" examines The American Shakespeare Center's voyage of discovery in recovering Shakespeare's original staging conditions and examines how performances through the prism of Blackfriars Playhouse help shed new light and energy on Shakespeare's work.

  • The Blackfriars is a national treasure, and not a boring, stodgy, cobwebbed one. Even those who have been soured on overblown, pretentious productions of Shakespeare come away from this theatre loving the Bard, and better understanding why he has lasted so long. You gotta go!
