[Overlapped the third and fifth movements of Reggi's 1982 travelogue, worked out better than Dark Side™ with "Under The Rainbow" or w/e crunchy myth... Brother Orange does a nice Broddy-cum-tango, makes both stunts for the irony layers.]

Godrey Reggio directed, cinematographer and editor was Ron Fricke, Philip Glass did the soundtrack. This is half of the middle third of one of three (1:3) film studies of human experience that are worth watching in entirety. Text at close explains the title of this 1982 masterpiece.

Koyaanisqatsi
ko-yan-nis-qatsi (from the Hopi language) n. 1. crazy life. 2. life in turmoil. 3. life out of balance. 4. life disintegrating. 5. in a state of life that calls for another way of living.

Translation of the Hopi Prophecies Sung in the film

"If we dig precious things from the land, we will invite disaster."

"Near the Day of Purification, there will be cobwebs spun back and forth in the sky."

"A container of ashes might one day be thrown from the sky which could burn the land and boil the oceans."

  • Many ways to look at things I guess but not when you view it from a vast distant height.

  • Sure there is... one could be drunk, so even perspective doesn't matter, or like El Greco... that guy could not get far enough away to focus on things. Did he let it stop his ambition RE: landscape painting? NO! Why? Coz he's Amerikkkahn, and We™....

    whoa. srry. El Greco=Spanish, i'm told. Dunno where i was headed there.

  • As always, great symbolism!

  • {Lessee if this actually replies.... let me clear my throat....a'ight}

    Thnx! plz see above RE: Gates- trilogy and June querries for you, si vous plai'!

  • WOW Bob that caused an explosion of imaginings in my mind and here is me thinking we are still unique. Are we? I hope I am :S The haunting music certainly adds volumes to the clip as well. Well done :)

  • Thnx! That's Phillip Glass's original soundtrack (for the most part) just laid over itself along with the clip... the way the tanks and buildings share lines convinced me that the production crew of Koyaanisqatsi actually had overlays in mind. I think if the film were cut into equal loops it would be a killer perpetual doomsayer kiosk....

  • I class myself as being ignorant re music and most movies as I don't have TV or Radio because I did not want to be programmed like the masses. I read many books and I am careful what my brain absorbes. I think for myself and choose the finest to converse with.
