@henrikvannistelrooij Speaking of the US, they'd probably dominate any sport they took enough interest in thanks to their enormous population (just look at the summer olympics). Lucky for us they are too focused on their own sports that noone else is interested in. Also, Americans don't have the highest GDP per capita, if that's what you were saying.

@henrikvannistelrooij Hockey is popular all over Sweden, and they suck you say? Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they win the Olympic gold in 2006 and the U20 gold this very month? It seems to me you're saying noone else in the world cares about hockey, so it that's the case, why do you go around on the net bashing other nations? You should be happy there are a few other good hockey nations or the sport you love would be internationally unknown.

@theade8 I dont think you understand. There are probably more middle-class Russians than people in Canada, but they prefer soccer even though they have a perfect climate for hockey. That is why we usually beat them. Hockey is only popular in the north part of Sweden which is why they suck. In Canada hockey is popular coast to coast- even in British Columbia which doesnt have the climate for it. If it were a competition of population and GDP USA would win every time.

@henrikvannistelrooij I don't think you quite understand, millions of people in Russia live in complete poverty and could literally not afford any sports gear. This is probably the reason football is popular all around the world, anyone can play, anywhere.

@theade8 Actually the average income in Russia is just over a third that of Canada when adjusted for purchasing power (though income distribution probably isnt as even). But that shouldnt matter because if they truly loved the game they would play it all winter like we do in Canada no matter the income. In my home city(Calgary) we have over 100 free outdoor rinks that are maintained by volunteers and are full every night even past -20. All you need are skates and a stick.

@ZykeYork Im not sure why I'm even responding to this but, we would have destroyed the US if it wasn't for Ryan Miller, in the end he let in a softy and we won. Sweden can only win when they dont have to play Canada.

@ZykeYork Those rankings are bullshit. There have been 11 best on best competitions in the history of the sport. Canada has won 7 of them (and 2 silvers) and no one else has won more than 1. We are more successful at hockey than Brazil is at soccer.

@henrikvannistelrooij A large GDP doesn't quite tell the story, GDP per capita does, and the average Canadian makes about five times more money than the average Russian. Anywho, if the nordic countries were nearly as large as Canada I think they'd be the dominating in most team sports, cause they do a great job already with the small amount of players they have. But of course, a larger population isn't as easily sustainable so one can never know for sure.
