We researched the effects of a sports drink, such as Gatorade, on the human body in comparison to water. Through our studies, we found that Gatorade aided in physical endurance and strength. We also looked at the specific functions of Gatorade on various parts of the body, including the heart, lungs, skin, and muscles. Gatorade empties from your stomach at the same rate as plain water, however it enters the intestines and speeds up the bodys absorption of fluid, carbohydrates, and electrolytes. Gatorade helps deliver glucose to the brain, which is necessary to sustain mental energy and keep the athlete focused. Gatorade helps fight urine loss by reducing the kidneys desire to produce urine. This helps the body retain fluids to be used as sweat and to restore hydration. Staying hydrated keeps blood moving throughout muscles, so heat can be removed and carbohydrates can transfer in to be used as fuel. The flow of fluids and electrolytes directly into the muscles helps reduce cramping. The body is incredibly interdependent, and an athlete performs best when all the factors work efficiently. Overall, it became quite clear that athletes would benefit from the consumption of Gatorade rather than plain water.
