My opinion on swimming vs hopping is that a driven dog will do whichever method is the most comfortable and efficient for their body.
My Josie is straight in the shoulders (and the rear, !!), so even though she's a BC it's just not structurally comfortable (possible?) for her to swim. My other BCs are more well angulated in the shoulders and naturally swim the poles.
No one way is "right" or "wrong" -- just go with it :)
