From an intellectual view point, the idea of divinity can be seen as a general and ancient need for humanity; a need to believe in something greater than themselves that can be an explaination for all that is unexplainable at that point in history. An extension of that need is a desire to maintain a feeling of conection with that divinity.

As a Christian, albeit, not a main stream Christian, I do believe in a divine creator and I do be that such a creator "listens" to its creation. I do not, however, believe that such "listening" is in anyway similar to humans having a conversation. I think that all divine matters and workings are beyond human understanding and any attempt we make of understanding the divine is from a limited and skewed perspective. I believe in more of a connection with the divine in general and a complete understanding on the part of the divine for its creation.

God gave us reason, but only in a limited capacity. Beyond that reason is faith.

  • I would question the wisdom of letting go of reason. During the time of a film we do it out of pleasure and entertainment. Then we rejoin reality.

I don't think faith is about validity either but faith-holders do -and they insist their approach to reality is equal if not superior to the non faith-holder. This is the major problem with faith and it's arrogance must be confronted.

  • You've entered into the realm of generalities. The voices of the majority of those who have some religious faith are drowned out by the much louder voices of those who are zealots.

I'm not sure if Red would agree with me on this, but The average follower of faiths seem to only pay attention to their beliefs when they have to, or when it suits them.

  • @DeDona1 I'm fairly confident Red would agree with you. I'll try to remember mention you remark, and see if she feels need to add commentary.

  • @13Heathens I agree with many of your points, however Jesus says we can simply pray, believe, and receive. If this is not true it is irresponsible. Many christians have believed this to such a degree that they go against conventional wisdom in the most mundane things. Like seeking medical treatment for their own children in easily treated ailments. Many times this leads to death of an innocent child.

  • @OTsuperduper - If God is omnipotent he should have the power to solve all problems. If he doesn't then he isn't omnipotent which would be a major problem for most believers in the Christian God.

  • What a cop-out!! So prayer is a waste of time eh? So the effect of asking god for help is the same as not bothering to pray at all. - Typical!!

  • I'm sure God hears all prayers but I also try to imagine myself in that position. 6 billion people all calling out my name at once. A large chunk are having sex and I can ignore those. Others are taking my name in vain (like crank calling 911) which pisses me off.

The remaining people are prioritized according to need, which means there a lot of complainers out there that need to solve their own problems and not depend on God for everything because more important problems are being solved.

  • No that was red. This is 13H typing. When red puts in a reply she always starts it with "Red:"

    Sorry about the confusion there.

  • "I've never met another Christian quite like me..." you wrote. Therefore I assume you have a Christian faith. If this is the case then I believe you must have a necessity for it. If this is not the case then I have been presumptious.

I accord totally with the people who come to understand how much they don't know -I would like them to be as comfortable with that reality as with the desire TO know.

However I do not understand your last sentence. I don't see this attitude as denigration either.

  • You're familiar with 'suspension of disbelief' when watching a movie or reading a book. That is akin to what I mean when I talk about faith. You let go of reason and merely accept accept something as it is presented.

Faith isn't about validity, but acceptance of an idea out of some personal need or desire.
