Penang is ready to welcome more than 200,000 local visitors and foreign tourists during this Chinese lunar new year which begins on February, 14 2010. The city of Georgetown is decorated with red lanterns, red cloths drapped over trees and other auspicious symbols.
A total of 2,500 red lanterns were strung at several streets along the UNESCO World Heritage Site such as Armenian Street, Cannon Square, Pitt Street and the surrounding areas. According to Loh Boon Huan the organizing chairman, a total of 80 associations participate and more than 2,000 to 3,000 people will be involved.
In a ceremony on February 5, 2010 evening Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng together with the organizing committee from the Penang Chinese Clan Council, Clan-Associations Youth Committee of Penang and other sponsors like DIGI and E&O Hotel lighted up the city.
