It was always said that Maggie never got any of Groucho's jokes. However, on this telecast, she starts laughing in a couple of spots. Either the whole "not understanding any of the humor" was a myth, or it took her almost 40 years to finally get the jokes! Nevertheless, a wonderful moment and a perfect conclusion to Miss Dumont's career.

@madtv99::::Dutch Masters and Muriel were both owned by Consolidated Cigar Company at the time.
-
@TheWhisperOaks:::::If you are talking about the young lady introducing the scene, that was Groucho's daughter Melinda. The pretty girl in the cigar commercial was Edie Adams, Ernie Kovacs' wife.

whoa... thats a great commercial at the end, lol

Thanks so much for posting this! Reading "Hello, I Must Be Going" (an enjoyable read about Groucho's final years) and had to see if this was on youtube. Notice how the audience applause sounds like it is "topped up" with a laugh track?!

Margaret Dumont passed away between tape and air. Miss Dumont died March 10,
1965 and this episode aired on ABC on April 10, 1965. According to Groucho,
she stood at the stage door with a bunch of roses in her arms regal as ever.

Margaret Dumont passed away in fact the very next day after this performance (heart attack). It's fortunate that she graced us with one last performance!

I took some pictures of the native girls there, but they weren't developed. XDDD

@wickedcoolally According to Bill Marx, Margeret once said she felt like the Marx brothers ruined her career because she was always type cast and couldn't get any other parts. She also never got their jokes, but she seemed very fond of them and them of her, so I don't think she really resented them or anything.
Sad that Miss Dumont passed away only a few days later, but she went out doing what she loved to the end, and obviously was having a wonderful time working with Groucho again! This is such a special video. Thank you so much for posting!!

35 years after the movie version of Animal Crackers, and they still could do the lines without missing a beat. Maggie really was Mrs. Rittenhouse to the very end.
