No it is still a gimmick. You can have gimmicky things and still have a big game developer publish games for the hardware. Example nintendo wii, the whole console is based around a gimmick.
Now gimmicks aren't a new thing. I consider the rumble pack from the n64 a gimmick but the difference between that and things like natal and the wii is it didn't take away from the game play it enhanced it.
