After hearing Nellie McKay do this wonderfully ironic song about feminists at the Taking Action for Animals Conference last year, I talked her into letting me tape it for my blog. But I haven't been blogging, so it's been sitting on my computer, and I have decided it is time to just get it out there. You might recognize the setting, the view from the Soho Grand Hotel, as the same one in which John Schneider did his remarkable video for me about his animal rights awakening. Some great stuff happens on the 16th floor of the Soho Grand Hotel! Nellie played me her wonderful song, Mother of Pearl, then spoke about the connection between feminism and veganism, and then, bless her, plugged Thanking the Monkey, which she had just read and was super excited about. And boy, in that last shot, does she ever look good in that Thanking the Monkey organic bamboo boatneck t-shirt!

  • GO VEGAN-FEMINIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @seflersinsburg10

Prostitution can be safer when legalized and regulated, but the majority of sex-workers don't enter into that work because it's empowering; typically there are early & continued histories of sexual abuse at play.

  • I LOVE Nellie! She's like a female me!

  • I love her. I had the pleasure of meeting her last year at a Mercy for Animals benefit dinner.

  • Not all feminists are against the practice.

  • @TheVeganHere I am inclined to agree with you, but I'd like to hear the case that feminists make against the practice. I'm sure there are a variety of opinions, but I'm especially curious to hear the views of those who believe it ought to remain illegal. Why do they hold this position?

  • @seflersinsburg10 I think it should definitely be decriminalized. Many of these women have to turn to pimps for protection. They are subjected to to all types of peril. Add to that, they are arrested and treated like garbage. And that is just pathetic!!!

  • Is there solid, empirical evidence that prostitution harms women? Would it harm women less if it were legalized (since frequent tests for STDs would be required and there would be zero chance of assault or rape)?

  • I'm having trouble hearing the lyrics.
