Thesis: The AR15 rifle is more reliable than people believe it to be.

The Test:
Part 1: Dust cover open and up, cover the rifle in sand and run 5 magazines through it.
Part 2: No cleaning conducted after part 1, Dust cover open and up, cover the rifle in sand and run it over with a Jeep, then run a magazine through it.

Results:
Part 1: The rifle functioned flawlessy with no malfunctions. The action was somewhat sluggish towards the end as oil cooked off and more dirt entered the action.

Part 2: The rifle did suffer two malfunctions that required combat racking, but otherwise ran. All lubrication was cooked off and there was sand in the action. The larger particles; small rocks, prevents the bolt from going all the way into battery twice. I honestly did not expect it to work at all at this point.

The CAV-15 receiver and C4 handguards survived without damaged. The CMMG upper was not damaged aside from finish wear.

  • Interesting. I found an article that the M4 came in last place in the dust test due to jams, but the military said they were going to buy it anyway.

My M16 did jam on me several times in the Desert as a solder. What make rifle are you using? Is it Colt or HK ?

  • @frankgon4 It is a CAV-15 lower with CMMG upper. Basically, the cheapest AR15 you can build commercially.

  • I would like to see the bolt open during this test, or at least some dirt actually get in the reciever..

  • @shkotay Yea this is true, but what you gotta realize is that this is true with any gun besides 50bmg's and others similar rifle rounds. Unless you hit them in the head or in vital organs your going tonhave to put more then one round in them. A 3 round burst always did the trick

  • Imagine of you used an in spec upper

  • I hate all this jam omatic bullshit from kids who have 0 experience. The weapon is used more then in the US and has a 92% us troop approval. The weapon is a fine combat weapon.

  • @stadon88 That is an unrealistic scenario....tell me a situation in a realistic firefight where the weapon is dropped into the sand while the bolt stays open...

  • @frankgon4 there is a reason, the M4's in that test were barrowed from the Army, they were used combat rifles that had seen their fair share of use. the other rifles were brand new from the factory, 6 otu of 10 rifles accounted for 70% of of the 662 rifle stoppages, the issues came from their worn springs that needed replacing, the army did not know they were for a test when requested by the DOD, colt got Stork a DOD company to do the same test with new M4's and had only 111 stoppages

  • I heard from a numbe rof guys who were in the military though that while they never had much problem with their rifles jamming (somewhat regular maintenance should be everyones priority), the prob was with the 5.56. It was inconsistent to them. Sometimes it would put a target down one shot, wounded or dead. Other times they had to hit a guy repeatedly just to slow him down, cause the bullets would zip through like an ice pick. Paul Howe himself said the same thing. Opinions ppl?

  • I would hate to clean this sucker haha

  • M4 feed ramps and barrel extension on cmmg?

  • @stadon88 thats the thing with AR's, there built so well they don't get that much dirt inside when the bolt is closed while buried in the ground, making it that much better lol :)

  • @oeyesea Of course we were told that M16 is flawless, and anything wrong with it was user error LMAO!!!
