Alan Freed was not without his faults, but he was a great DJ and an incredible proponent of Rock music, for which he was hated by racist white adults who hated rock music and denounced Freed for "mixing the races." As to the Payola thing; Dick Clark, who peddled sanitized white schlock-rockers like Fabian "owned" 33 record companies, a management firm, and a record-pressing plant, and held copyright to 162 songs, many of which he popularized on "Bandstand." But he got off easy. Coincidence?
