Gillian Welch's timeless Appalachian-style classic Orphan Girl, originally from the 1996 "Revival" album. This is a very beautiful stripped-down live version from the Prairie Home Companion show in St. Paul, MN on 4.19.97, which I personally feel far exceeds the original. No video exists.

  • My pleasure; such an amazing performance.

  • Some people like to crap on "country," music and I can't disagree most mainstream country is nothing more than pop drivel with a fiddle solo thrown in. But, real country, Gillian Welch, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Sarah Jarosz--these are some of the very few artists around today, making real music, heartfelt, soul felt.,with no regard or desire for mainstream success, rather regard only for the music

  • With the possible exceptions of Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins, David Rawlings plays guitar like no one else. Strident, tasteful, lyric and perfect!

  • The best American music is from these two married folks and the married duo of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist of Over The Rhine. Sarah Jarosz is a young prodigy from Texas; if she meets and marries a musician, some unexpected and unsuspected might arise...

  • @wanderer686

Very good description. On this version, Rawlins plays like Willie Nelson has always dreamed of playing. And of course, he "gets" Gillians' songs perfectly.

  • speachless......gotta love these two.

  • Wanna enjoy this to the max?

Do what I do: put your cursor over the right-facing triangle and click play, just as you say, "here comes the awesome." Works every time.

  • @happytime64 Good luck to you mate. You've certainly got taste in music and I hope your daughter inherits your love of Gillian Welch.

  • I have been trying to put friends who mostly "get" music onto Gillian Welch. It ain't workin'. But I come here and I see people talking about Mark Knopfler and Richard Thompson and I think to myself, "damn straight", and I say, "Emmylou, also". Music is like that; it's a horse and water thing, I guess.

I should add: while David Rawlings has more talent in his weak hand pinkie that I have in my whole damn self, he's lucky to have a lady who sings like that. Just sayin'.

    Peace out.

  • saw Gillian and Dave at Brighton , the best show I have seen in years , sadly they did not sing this , but I could not complain , if there a better picker than Dave Rawlings I have never heard him

  • Thanx for the quality sound on this upload. This is one of her greats. Probably in the top 50 or so of the greatest songs she's written.

I swear, she's the best songwriter this side of Richard Thompson.
