Its not just materialism because I know middle class consumer junkies that dont wait in line at midnight for trite shit. Its being from the inner city and having nothing - when you have nothing you obsess over what is within reach: language/slang, haircuts, then shoes, then clothes, then jewelry, then drinks at the club, then cars - a home or true prosperity/investment is dead last and priority is all backwards bc its all about keeping appearances with what is in reach in the short term.

I have to admit in my youth I was a little obsessed with getting the new J's. Lucky for me I wear a child's size and never had any issues. I've been giving them away to nieces and nephews for years. I just gave away the 11's in hot pink to my god-daughter this summer.

@uwmbigb You also have to understand what kind of environment they grow up in. They grow up in such an environment that respect is the only thing that matters. Whether that respect is garnered by violence or by what one wears does not matter. Plus, being kept in an economically disadvantaged position by the rest of society certainly doesn't help anything.

I'll be honest, the only thing i EVER stood in line for, waiting for it's release, was when i had a pre-ordered copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows waiting for me... I had a ticket to get it upon release, and there was even a party at the book shop, related to the book of course... They put me in Slytherin btw.. Anyways, getting off topic... We were orderly, had fun, and even made posh jokes... I see this and I'm appalled at how people can be this over shoes, while we're calm over books

@uwmbigb I enjoyed reading your comment, for real.
Those idiots think swagger or "swag" nowadays is measured in material possessions...when really it's about the personality of someone & about having just self-confidence (along those lines anyway lol).

Proteanview, you are forgetting about the intelligence factor. These folks we're talking about, for the most part, are probably not even of average intelligence. These incidents don't say anything about society because the participants are not representative samples of the population. They are the types who are especially vulnerable to commercial hype, peer pressure and materialism because all these things are easy to understand.

it is called brainwashing; advertisers have done lengthy studies and know just how to promote their junk goods; they even target our children during sat. morning cartoons; America needs to wake up and quit being so materialistic, get back to basics, start demanding american made products, and be content in life with less; lets start admiring someone for the benefits they bring to their community instead of the bling they place on their body

I used to be a fan of sneakers, literally, Air Jordans were my favourite. However, I realized that a shoe is basically, a shoe, so I dropped the obsession and moved onto something more beneficial. I have heard stories were people would pay $1100 for a Air Yeezy (Nike + Kanye West Collab)... $1100? For a designer shoe? Pathetic.

Bunch of idiots in my opinion.

That frosts me to no end too! All these idiots lining up like cattle at Golden Corral (LOL) for anything! More strangely these same people will complain they have no jobs, why? They buy foreign made products. New Balance is made in America, line up for New Balance and stimulate the economy! Just google: Nike Shoes Manufacturing or see wiki on it. To see where the money goes when you pay insane prices for stuff.
One of things I've noticed growing up is for some reason people treat you better and behave nicer just because you have something expensive. Either it being a nicer car, pricier cloths, or expensive shoes; socially and I suspect psychologically people change around.
That's why people do things like this, their hooked on that social high. Its more then a shoe but a status symbol. They will do anything. I just don't get and I don't think its race specific, i.e. apple frenzy.

How often and how much do you run?
utuebmakeustupid 2 months ago
@utuebmakeustupid 12-15 miles/week, 4 days/week. Higher mileage when training for a run.
