It's not often the USA,with it's seemingly endless supply of world class 400m runners, doesn't win the gold....for once (and probably only once!)an inspired British quartet of Black,Redmond,Regis and Akabusi get one over on them. Oh,and it was a cracking race, too!

  • David Coleman was the perfect commentator - enthused, eloquent and unbiased - and here he called the result while Pettigrew was still ahead! Marvellous stuff.

  • @fsdfsdfdsfdsfable That would be John Fashanu.

  • haha! eat it uncle sam!

  • o damn o__o

  • didnt sound very excited coleman...ive heard him more excited

  • Also class commentating - watching athletics now makes me cringe. Or is it me getting old?....lol

  • Since the USA team were druggies at the time - it makes this victory even sweeter. Think of the Golds That Black and the team would have won if the Yanks had been disqualified as cheats as they always have been.

  • Akabusi looked as hellbent on winniing as hellbent gets. What a final leg, great performance all round though!

  • When athletes were superstars like footballers are today. I'll never forget this race and the pride I felt watching them win.

  • There is that magic bit where you just knew he would do it. I remember screaming at the telly, waking my parents up...amazing. Apparently, if you decided you're going to do it, you can do it.

  • I've never forgotten the Akabusi quote before the race: "I will do my best, and if God wants it, we will win". With that degree of assurance, you can do pretty well anything.

    RIP Antonio Pettigrew.
