Ever wonder how vegetarianism began?

Who were the first vegetarians?

Did you know that during the middle ages, the Pope ordered monks to be vegetarian?

Did you know the first vegetarian "health nut" was born in 1467 and lived to be 99 years old?

When was the first advertisement for non-leather shoes? Did you guess 1851?

Do you know what German vegetarian societies did during the Nazi period, when they were forced to either join the Nazi party or disband?

How well do you know your vegetarian history?

  • Thank you very much for posting :) I'm a diary eating wool wearing vegetarian (as per the initial definition :P).I have to say the multiple definitions are... confusing... I've a question for you, especially that you are in California and you get the polluted winds / water over there. Do you know what effect the Fukushima fiasco has on our food in the ground and in the water and thus on vegetarians? What about in Japan? Does IVU have any info on this? Thank you :)
