A slideshow of Waterhouse's paintings, studies and drawings inspired by Tennyson's poem The Lady of Shalott. Includes photos of Waterhouse, and of his edition of Tennyson's poems in which he sketched out ideas for paintings. The medieval music is 'Adiu Adiu Dous Dame', composed by Francesco Landini c. 1350-97, and performed by Mediva (Magnatune).

  • "heard a carol, mornful holy,

    chanted loudly, chanted lowly

'till her blood was frozen slowly,

    and her eyes darken'd wholly

    turn'd tward camelot:

for ere she reach'd upon the tide

the first house by the water-side

singing in her song, she died

    The Lady of Shalott.
