Tu lo sai
Giuseppe Torelli

Dixie Lacuesta, soprano
Mikhail Lastrilla, pianist

lyrics
Tu lo sai quanto t'amai,
Tu lo sai, lo sai crudel!
Io non bramo altra mercè,
Ma ricordati di me,
E poi sprezza un infedel.

english translation of lyrics

You now know how I loved you,
You now know, my cruel love !
Other loves I don't desire,
just remember your old lover
bringing scorn to the unfaithful.

about the song:
"I really loved you; remember that!"
this aria is the final movement of a solo cantata,
come potesti lasciarmi, infida (how could you ever leave me, unfaithful woman?)
the piece as a whole is a complaint of a lover who feels that his deep and sincere affection has been unjustly betrayed.

about the composer:
Giuseppe Torelli (April 22, 1658 February 8, 1709) was an Italian violist, violinist, teacher, and composer.

Torelli is most remembered for his contributions to the development of the instrumental concerto (Newman 1972, p. 142), especially concerti grossi and the solo concerto, for strings and continuo, as well as being the most prolific Baroque composer for trumpets (Tarr 1974).

Torelli was born in Verona. It is not known with whom he studied violin though it has been speculated that he was a pupil of Leonardo Brugnoli or Bartolomeo Laurenti, but it is certain that he studied composition with Giacomo Antonio Perti (Schnoebelen and Vanscheeuwijk 2001). On June 27, 1684, at the age of 26, he became a member of the Accademia Filarmonica as suonatore di violino (Schnoebelen and Vanscheeuwijk 2001). By 1698 he was maestro di concerto at the court of Georg Friedrich II, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, where he conducted the orchestra for Le pazzie d'amore e dell'interesse, an idea drammatica composed by the maestro di cappella, the castrato Francesco Antonio Pistocchi, before leaving for Vienna in December 1699 (Schnoebelen and Vanscheeuwijk 2001). He returned to Bologna sometime before February (1701), when he is listed as a violinist in the newly re-formed cappella musicale at San Petronio, directed by his former composition teacher Perti (Schnoebelen and Vanscheeuwijk 2001).

He died in Bologna in 1709, where his manuscripts are conserved in the San Petronio archives. Giuseppe's brother, Felice Torelli, was a Bolognese painter of modest reputation, who went on to be a founding member of the Accademia Clementina. The most notable amongst Giuseppe's many pupils was Francesco Manfredini.

  • @AoifeForte He/she shouldn't have given you this. This is a relatively easy song, but definitely not for a beginner. Tell them you're uncomfortable singing this song, and if you still have to, just do your best. <3

  • gosh my singing teach has given me this song ( me being twelve only done singing since september) i mean if youll look at my channel you would see .. I CANT SING LIKE THIS :(

  • i love the tone of your voice but i feel like your vibrato is to tight, try to relax it (= you do have a beautiful voice, im taking this song to try out for district / state tomorrow morning

  • @ML4M This requires a highly developed balance between breath control and relaxation, deceptively difficult. This student is doing very well with it and should KEEP AT IT.

  • There are a lot of accidentals written in to the piece so what can sound like pitch problems are intentional

Love the tone of your voice!

  • @newberrysinger Nope, it's not the ornaments. At 0:37 she was considerably sharp.

  • She wasn't off pitch at all lol, those ornaments are actually written into the piece you just have to have an ear to hear that they are indeed on pitch and fits in the piece

  • You have SUCH a pretty voice, I love it!! But there were a lot of pitch issues in this song. Please keep working on your technique, because once you work the kinks out you will be incredible! :)

  • I just realized my Voice teacher gave me page 1, 2, and another page 2 of this song. Oh well. That explains why I keep getting lost XD.

    You have a beautiful voice.

  • You have a beautiful voice, but the use of all the optional ornaments takes a lot away from the meaning of the piece. Some of them were a little off pitch or weren't the proper rhythm which can be distracting if you know the song. You do have a wonderful voice so keep singing!
