"Is That All There Is?"
Words and Music by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller
Peggy Lee

According to wikipedia Leiber and Stoller were inspired to write this by a Thomas Mann short story "Disillusionment". Don't know about that.

But you really do have to hear the words to get the full picture of this song. I'm hoping someone will post a video response speaking/singing the lyric.

I think the best version on youtube of Peggy singing it is here:

Unfortunately it's inexplicably cut off before it finishes.

My arrangement/transcription. Learned by ear. I have nothing written down.
Taylor NS54-ce, hybrid classical
Standard tuning
D'addario Pro Arte normal tension nylon strings

  • I can't remember where it was, but I heard Leiber and Stoller talking about writing this song and saying it was the strangest one they had ever written. Stoller had written some lyrics and didn't know what to do with them. He took them to Leiber who had a strange tune in his head and then they put the two together.

A very fine arrangement for solo guitar. Thank you for sharing.

    Hi Toni,

I'm sorry, I can't help you concerning this question. I don't think it was very popular, I listened to other songs in 1970. The cabaret feeling is absolutely there and the fien de siecle literature of Thomas Mann could be the inspiration. Nevertheless it's a wonderful song and I really like your guitar arrangement!

    Cheers,

    Bernd
