This is a rather modern ballet in the repetoire of the National Ballet of China (formerly Central Ballet of China). I actually dislike the choreography a lot. It seems that the choreographer thinks kabuki is Chinese. and presents a caricature of whatever he takes "Chinese" to be. The male dancer remains a principle at the National Ballet of China. Unsure about the ballerina.

The following is from the the program synopsis when the then Central Ballet of China toured U.S. in 11/1995:
"Before the Wedding Chamber is a ballet choreographed by American Norman Walker set to two pieces of music from the traditional Chinese work, Chimes. Visiting China in January of 1990, Walker created this work for the Central Ballet, who refer to it as 'the Chinese Wedding Chamber in the Eyes of an American.' A favorite work of the company, it has been performed frequently in many cities in China and abroad."

  • I thought it was beautiful, personally.

  • I have to disagree with the person who posted this video. I love the choreography. I think it is absolutely stunning and am not sure why one wouldn't like it.

  • 总觉得还是传统一点的好。

  • The ballerina in this footage, Li Chunhong, had later on joined the "La La La Human Steps" in Montreal. You can see her in the film Amelia dancing one of the episodes. I think she is now taking up teaching in Montreal.

  • Then you should go watch something else!

  • The Choreo has to fit the music, they can't dance show jazz or hip hop to the music, get it!

  • Mr. Walker used to teach some of my Ballet and Modern classes!

  • i thought the choreography was very interesting, fresh and unique

impressive grace flexibility and athleticism on the part of the dancers

  • I agree the comment by the original poster.
