Uhm family has the first luthier in Korea.
Their family introduced by many times, TV, Radio, News papers, magazines in Korea because they are the Korean luthiers history.
And they started from veneer guitar factory but they had dreamed handmade guitar and archived that. This is success stories of Uhm family.
The first luthier is SangOk Uhm and he is the history of Korean luthier.
When they started making guitar in 1932, in Korea there are only few guitars(About 10 or less), and Uhm family was rich, but not enough to buy guitar. So, SangOk decided to make guitar by himself, and investigated friends guitar and first guitar done by 1932.
But in Korea, there are no materials and no information, so he built his own making rule.
Before Korean war, Uhm family lost all things, no house and no money, so SangOk Uhm have to make money with empty hands, so he made guitar and sold it to American soldiers.
But in Korea, there are no guitar materials, so he has to get woods from old Korean furniture and house timber. (Korean pine tree used for top and side back was Korean maple.)
TaeHeung Uhm, the son of SangOk.
He did not want to be luthier, because all Korean luthier are poor and they used bad materials so their guitar was worst.
But he wants to be guitarist and learned play guitar, but he found he has no money to be guitarist. So he decided to be luthier for life, and received guitar factory from SangOk Uhm.
Until 1980s, Korean governments did not allow to over sea travel to public, and not allowed personal import. So, TaeHeung Uhm used house timber for making guitar.
At 1988, Korean government allowed oversea trip to publics, he borrowed money from friends and visit Japan, German, America and Spain for learn and buy guitar materials.
According his said, when he visited Japan in 1988, he saw German spruce by first time. And he surprised at many good guitar materials exist. Because all Korean luthiers used rosewoods for furniture and American spruces house timber. So he decided to buy good materials for guitar.
But he was famous Korean luthier in Korea but poor, so he returned Korea and sold his house for make money.
In 1989, he visited German luthiers workshop and bought materials from him, because he cant speaking any foreign language and no information were can buy it.
After visited German, for make good sounds, he forgive factory working and started hand making guitar.
It was very long time and tough time for he and his family, but he succeed to make good sounds.
He always saying,
I dont know how many times I need for make perfect sound, but my sound just started.
